Let your State Legislators know you support School Choice!

Let your State Legislators know you support School Choice!

This year, the 10th Anniversary of School Choice in Indiana, is a really important year. This year the Indiana House is taking up legislation that could greatly impact options Indiana families have open to them.

Yesterday, the House Ways and Means Committee passed House Bill 1005 (Choice Scholarship expansion & ESA program.) The vote was 16-8 in support. The bill now moves on to the full House. If passed in its current form, it will allow more families to have access to quality education – despite their zip code – streamline the program to provide greater funding for current families, and expand the eligibility requirements so that more families will be able to choose the school that best fits their needs.

For Instance: the House Bill 1005 would do away with the income tiers and raise the income eligibility, giving all families of four earning up to $109,000 a 90% voucher in 2021-22. Then in 2022-2023 this level would rise to give families of four earning up to $145,000 a 90% voucher.

We are asking our families to write to their legislators in support of House Bill 1005. It is a really easy process and your support, in your own words, can make a difference! It could be just the push we need to help your family and thousands more like you.

Below, we’ve provided some tips on what to write and how to write it, as well as a link to a site where you can find your legislators. It will take about 10 minutes for you to do this, but it could have a lifetime impact on your family and your finances, not to mention the lives of thousands of Hoosier children!

Here are some tips for writing to your Representative in support of School Choice:

  • Address the elected official as either “Representative (Last Name)” or “Senator (Last Name)”
  • Introduce yourself (Your name, your children’s name(s), where they attend school, etc). Make it personal so the legislator can get to know you.
  • Speak to the impact of the Choice program on your child(ren) and family. What would your educational experience look like without that help? State your concern if the program was negatively impacted.
  • “Please protect this program so families like mine can continue to benefit.”
  • Thank your elected official for their service to their community. Show your appreciation for listening to your concerns.
  • **Make sure to remain positive in your tone and not bash our public school partners in your letter.

Don’t know who your legislators are?

You can easily find them by clicking on this link. Once there, click on the link midway down the page that says: “Who Are Your Elected Officials?” Accept the Data Disclaimer. There will be a box for you to enter your street address on the top left hand corner and you need to select “State” at the top right. Your State Representative will be listed, along with their email address, on the right hand side of the page.

Thank you for your support!
