Lent Week 4

Lent Week 4

The third country the students learn in Lent is Kenya. It is a country in East Africa with a savanna, lakes and mountain highlands. It is home to more than 50 million people. Wildlife includes lions, elephants, rhinos and giraffes. Kenya has little rain. More extreme droughts, higher temperatures, unpredictable rainfall and flooding due to climate change has affected Kenya’s people, wildlife and land. Catholic Relief Services has been working in Kenya since 1965 by supporting improved agriculture and working conditions. Help and education is given in health, water, sanitation, social services for children and families and peacebuilding efforts. Through the story of Rebecca and her husband, Lotiang, they participated in a CRS program that installed a solar powered well in their village and learned new farming techniques. Their story helps our students understand the Catholic social teaching: Human dignity involves rights and responsibilities & every person has the right to food, water and education.
