Congratulations to the Central Catholic junior high Spell Bowl team, which has qualified for the state finals.
The Knights won their regional Class 4 competition Wednesday at Attica High School, correctly spelling 39 words. That score was the fifth-highest statewide in Class 4.
The CC spellers were led by eighth-grader Kate Hutzel, who built a big lead early for the Knights by correctly spelling seven of her nine words in the first round, including currant, alma mater, ricochet, and entrepreneur. Three team members – Carson Risch, Maria Vawter, and Andrew Boggess – each correctly spelled six words. Samuel Siemers protected a one-word lead in the final round by correctly spelling the final word, polypropylene. CC defeated Lafayette Christian 39-38 to take home blue ribbons in the regional.
Also competing for CC were Nathan Hardenburg, Joshua Siemers, and Joseph Davis.
Rounding out the CC Spell Bowl roster are Joey Stair, Joey Riehle, Liz Hutzel, and Caitlin Dineen.
The Knights are among eight Class 4 teams who will compete in the state finals Saturday, Nov. 11, at Purdue University.
The team is coached by Mr. Joe Gerrety and Sister Joan Roeder.
