ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS
Mr. Tim Bordenet, Director of Athletics
We at Central Catholic truly do have many things to be thankful for! An outstanding fall sport season was capped off by our volleyball team advancing to the semi-state championship game, our girls’ soccer team winning the Regional, and our boys’ soccer and football teams winning Sectional titles. Miriam Walker also advanced to the Semi-State in cross country and set a new school record time in the Sectional. Congratulations to the players and coaching staffs for all of your outstanding accomplishments! Everyone in the Central Catholic community is very proud of you!
Our winter sports’ seasons are now in full swing, and the holidays are right around the corner. Our athletes and coaches are working hard to make this season one to remember. Our girls’ basketball team was 3-3 heading into December. Building on back to back state championships, our Lady Knights were ranked #1 in class 2A to start the season and have their eyes set on winning another state championship in March.
Our boys’ basketball team opened up the season with the traditional J&C Hoops tournament. As always, a tough schedule of regular season games is on tap for our Knights. The home opener was on Saturday, December 10 against Roncalli. We will be hosting two girls and boys basketball doubleheaders this winter. On Saturday, January 7, our Knights will take on Renssleaer and on January 27 will host Guerin Catholic. This is a great chance to watch both girls’ and boys’ teams on the same night.
The swim teams look to be very strong this winter. The swimmers have a tremendous amount of dedication, commitment, and enthusiasm. The girls’ team is strong in numbers and in talent with 15 girls out for swimming. Our boys’ team has 10 swimmers to start the season and will be very competitive. Although both teams are young, our swim teams will have enough swimmers to score and compete in every meet. We are very appreciative of the YMCA and the YWCA to allow us to rent pool space for practices. Even though we don’t host home meets, I encourage you to show your support of our swim team at one of their meets. We have some outstanding swimmers that could make it to the state finals in Indianapolis once again!
Our wrestling team continues to build and will be able to fill most weight classes this year. A record number of 19 wrestlers will take the mat this winter. Just a few years ago, our wrestling program was nearly defunct with only a few wrestlers involved. Our coaches – Pat O’Keefe (’88) and Cody Schrader (’11) have done a tremendous job of building interest and resurrecting our wrestling program. Undoubtedly, our junior high wrestling program is starting to pay dividends! Come out and support our wrestlers!
Finally, the Central Catholic Athletic Department thanks you for your outstanding support throughout the year. During the holiday season, we all need to take time to reflect on our many blessings and thank the Lord for nurturing our great school. It is truly great to be a Knight!
