Congratulations to the junior high Academic Spell Bowl team, which has qualified to compete in the state finals.
The team’s area competition score of 48 on Wednesday was 12th-highest among 117 teams in the state (including all four classes). CC is among 30 teams statewide that qualified to compete in the state finals at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Purdue University.
This is the third time in the past 11 years that a CC junior high team has qualified for the state finals.
Top spellers for the Knights in the area competition were eighth-graders Nicholas Props and Samantha Haro, each of whom correctly spelled eight of nine words in their respective rounds. Other spellers for CC in the area competition were Katelyn Tanney, Lillian Tanney, Sadie Prothero, Nicole Martinez, Carson Gray, and Jace Rogers.
Other team members are Sarah Switzer, Lilikoi Bannon, Christian Silva, Maggie Friel, Richard DeCicca and Abby McCaw.
The team is coached by Joe Gerrety and Rachel Stewart.
