Congratulations to seventh-grader Maria Vawter, who won the Central Catholic school spelling bee Thursday. Maria correctly spelled 10 words and won the competition by correctly spelling antidote. She emerged from a strong pool of eight spellers from the junior high in the most competitive school spelling bee in the past five years. Maria will represent Central Catholic at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on March 4 at Benton-Central Jr.-Sr. High School, competing for a chance to advance to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May. Congratulations to the other seven spellers, who contributed to such a strong competition. They were eighth-graders Jeremiah Lewis and Robert “Gray” Weeks and seventh-graders Nathan Hardenburg, Josh Siemers, Abigail Alexander, Sam Siemers, and Kate Hutzel.
Several of these spellers will represent CC in the Christian Schools Spelling Bee on Feb. 7 at Faith Christian School.
