Prior to the varsity football game on Friday, August 18, which takes place at CC, Central Catholic and Jefferson High Schools are selling game t–shirts to benefit the National Kidney Foundation of Indiana and to increase awareness of the need for organ donation. T-shirt orders are due in each school by 10 am Wednesday, August 16. Cost of the shirts is $10.00 with all proceeds being donated to the National Kidney Foundation.
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is the leading organization in the U.S. dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease for hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals, millions of patients and their families, and tens of millions of Americans at risk.
One in seven American adults, or 30 million people, are estimated to have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). However, 96% of those with early kidney disease (stages 1 and 2) don’t even know they have CKD. And of those with severely reduced kidney function, (stage 4) but not on dialysis, 48% are not aware of having the disease.
In 2015 the NKF reported that:
- 100,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant
- 4,000 die each year waiting for a kidney – that means 12 die every day; 1 dies every 2 hours
- 18,000 people receive a transplant every year and only 6,000 come from living donors
Kidneys are not the only organ that are desperately needed by many Americans. Since 1998, Donate Life Indiana is the state-authorized nonprofit organization responsible for managing the Indiana Donor Registry. The mission is to save lives by creating opportunities for all Indiana citizens to sign up on our official state registry while striving to raise awareness for organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation through public education. The web site states that currently there are 118,554 people in Indiana needing an organ transplant including heart, lung, pancreas, kidney, liver, cornea, skin, intestine, bone, veins and heart valves.
Please join us on Friday, August 18 at Central Catholic for the Central Catholic/Jefferson High schools’ football game to learn more about organ transplant and donate to the National Kidney Foundation of Indiana.
