It is hard to believe, but the IHSAA tournaments have either begun or will very soon for our winter sports. The girls swim team competed in the Zionsville Sectional on February 2nd and 4th. Kim Cahoon finished 8th in the 100 Yard Backstroke and 9th in the 200 Freestyle while Kylee Hicks finished 10th in the 50 Freestyle and 13th in the 100 Freestyle. The 200 Yard Freestyle relay team of Kim Cahoon, Annie O’Bryan, Annabelle Davis, and Kylee Hicks finished 8th. The 400 Yard Freestyle team of Cahoon, Sydney Rose, Davis, and Hicks finished in 7th place. Great job swimmers! The boys swim team will compete in the Zionsville Sectional on February 16.
Our Lady Knight basketball team’s season came to an end in the championship game of the 2A Sectional that was hosted here at Central Catholic. Carroll defeated our Knights 35-30 to break a streak of 11 straight Sectional championships. Also during that time period, our Lady Knights won a remarkable three state championships, two of which took place in the past two years. This year’s team finished 15-10 despite losing several key players to graduation last year. Emma Gerrety was the lone senior on this year’s squad.
The wrestling team finished 7th out of 11 teams in the Lafayette Jeff Sectional on January 28th. Isaac Switzer finished 5th at 106 pounds, Dakota Skees was 6th at 132, Jordan Turpin finished in 3rd place at 138 pounds, Dawson Skees was runner-up at 145 pounds and Tommy Devine was 6th place at 285 pounds. Dawson and Jordan both advanced to the Logansport Regional. Dawson finished third at the Regional and has advanced to the East Chicago semi-state on February 11.
Our varsity boys’ basketball team has played a grueling schedule but has been able to post a 12-5 record heading into the cross-town rivalry game with West Lafayette on Friday, February 10 here at Central Catholic. Thus far, the boys have only played four class 1A or 2A schools and have won all of those games.
Finally, this is the first year that Central Catholic has had representation in High School athletics for gymnastics. Maia Bell is the first gymnast to compete in High School sanctioned meets as a Central Catholic Knight! Maia competed alongside McCutcheon and 5 other schools at the Lafayette Sports Complex, home of the Elite Gymnastics team. She will also be competing at sectionals on February 25th at Lafayette Jefferson.
It is not too early to start thinking about the yearly athletic physicals. As a reminder, any physical completed after April 1 is good for the 2017-2018 school year. To participate in summer workouts, a completed physical must be on file before participation can begin. Central Catholic will host a physical night this spring on Monday, May 1 for junior high and senior high athletes. The sign-up for the physical night will begin in early March in the athletic office. Information will be posted on the school announcements later this month.
